LETTERS | Sunday, 04 November 2007 We don’t miss a trick, do we? Reading Karl Schembri’s article “The great Caravaggio swindle” one can only conclude that the Maltese have been served another “froga” (mess). If the exhibition organisers had done some homework and at least sought the advice of established experts, both local or foreign, they would not have ended up with egg on their faces and a bucketful of lame excuses. Besides, it is simply unacceptable to be misled into believing that one is admiring Caravaggios when this is probably not so. Whatever happened to the concept of “fair trading”? Anyone interested in the subject can visit “Tutta l`opera del Caravaggio – una mostra impossibile” at http://www.caravaggio.rai.it/, where a simple comparison can be made of what is catalogued there to the dubious exhibits “on show” in Malta sets. Incidentally, another internet site worth visiting is “He lived badly, brutally / The complete Caravaggio” at http://arts.guardian.co.uk/features/story/0,,1415968,00.html” which comprises a set of three open minded and entertaining articles published in The Guardian by art critic Jonathan Jones.
