LETTERS | Sunday, 04 November 2007 Caravaggio exhibition – the divine con I guess most of the people visiting the Caravaggio exhibition were pretty baffled when they came to know that only two of the eight paintings exhibited are authentic Caravaggio masterpieces. In my humble opinion, this is a complete con and an absolute insult to the people visiting this exhibition, since Heritage Malta marketed it as being “an exhibition of original Caravaggio masterpieces”. To add insult to injury, nine out of the 17 paintings did not make it to the exhibition. I wonder what the entrance fee would have been if all the seventeen paintings were exhibited! On a positive note, Heritage Malta are lucky that Caravaggio himself will never come to know of this exhibition, as I am pretty sure that with his aggressive character, it would have driven him nuts. It is also a complete shame that the ‘Beheading of St John’ was not included in this exhibition. Including this masterpiece would have alleviated this rip off. Just like the advert indicates, I hope that this is truly a “unique experience” (esperjenza ta’ darba) and that Heritage Malta realise that this is absolutely unacceptable.
