LETTERS | Sunday, 04 November 2007 Valletta is no race course I am writing to protest against the decision to use Valletta’s roads as a motorcar race course over the weekend of 27 to 28 October 2007, in the hope that there will be no repeat occurrence. Whoever was responsible failed to take into consideration the needs of the residents, especially elderly residents. In the afternoon of 27 October, access by car to and from Valletta was blocked through the three motorcar carriageways. Did anyone bother to take into account what would happen if a resident fell ill – was the race going to stop to allow family members get through? Is it fair for Valletta residents to go through such ordeal and deprive people of access to and from their homes for the good part of a weekend? Perhaps this is someone’s bright idea of encouraging people to come to live in Valletta or to give Valletta residents a taste of what people in times gone by passed through when Valletta was under siege. Do we want Valletta to become a motorcar racecourse? I certainly do not and urge fellow Valletta residents who feel as I do to voice their grievances with the authorities, otherwise I very much fear that we will have more of the same. Paul Edgar Micallef, Valletta
