Malta failed to get a mention in a 10-page supplement in the London Sunday Times’ travel section promoting the best 100 holiday venues selected on the basis of brochures and websites promoting the destinations.
The 100 holiday destinations were classified to target specific audiences from family travel to adventure trips, from holidays on boats and trains to budget destinations, from romantic sites to tropical beaches and other classifications.
Amazingly, Malta did not classify in any of the categories failing to make it among the Sunday Times’ top 100 holiday destinations for summer 2008.
The journalist trawled through brochures and websites to find this summer’s best holidays. The report advised readers to throw away the brochures and log off the web because the journalist had carried out the work on their behalf.
Malta’s failure to be listed as a summer destination cannot be blamed on the euro as other members of the Eurozone were also listed. Ironically, the only advert in the same publication promoting our country advertised the island as ‘The Mediterranean’s best kept secret’.
Meanwhile, low fares giant Ryanair yesterday launched its biggest ever January seat sale, giving away one million free bonus flights (no taxes, no fees, no charges) to any passenger who makes any booking on any Ryanair route before midnight on Thursday.
The airline said passengers who book any flight to and from Malta with fares from 10 euros including taxes will be able to avail themselves of free flights on the Malta-Valencia and Barcelona (Girona routes).
Passengers booking any return flight on the Ryanair website in the period January 8 to 10 will be permitted to book a second return flight for free (taxes reduced to zero) through a password protected page, Ryanair said.
