NEWS | Wednesday, 17 October 2007 Cassola, Pecoraro Scanio call for tripartite talks on Libyan nukes The Italian Greens last Saturday called for talks to be held over plans by the French government to export nuclear technology to Libya, a deal believed to have been hatched during negotiations for the release of the Bulgarian medics.
At the federal council of the Verdi, held last Saturday in Rome at the Hotel Palatino, Minister Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio said when speaking about nuclear issues that Europe should expose the French president Nicolas Sarkozy’s “double standards”: “It is not possible that the French government suggests that we should prepare for war against Iran because of its nuclear potential, and then the same French government proposes supplying Libya with nuclear reactors, lying on the doorstep of Italy and Malta! These double standards are unacceptable.” The Maltese MP in the Italian Parliament, Arnold Cassola, said: “We have a historic opportunity to review European policy vis-à-vis nuclear, since Germany and Austria have just taken the initiative to reform the 1957 Euratom Treaty during the present IGC talks, proposing to diminish and abolish subsidies to the nuclear industry. Prime Minister Prodi should ensure that Italy teams up with Germany and Austria on this issue.” Any comments? |
