Malta’s questionable oil strategy Malta’s freezing of the oil exploration within Anadarko and Pancontinental’s permit and subsequent cancelling due to lack of performance, stinks! The oil prospects the companies wanted to drill were within undisputed Maltese waters; only the border was the problem. The lock-down of the exploration permit was apparently due to the Maltese authorities’ negotiations on a border agreement with Libya, but was it more to do with the substantial increase in oil prices and Malta wanting a better deal with the oil companies? Or does Malta always back down when Libya threatens? Any comments? |
