Chinese president visits Abela in Shanghai hospital President George Abela was visited yesterday by Chinese President Hu Jintao at Ruijin Hospital.Abela was hospitalised after suffering back injuries when he slipped at the hotel he is staying in while on a visit to China. Abela was on his way to join his wife for breakfast when he accidentally slipped, sources said. He was taken to Ruijin Hospital by ambulance and was kept overnight for further observation. Abela said the Maltese delegation had been overwhelmed by the excellent treatment and hospitality they were shown, making special mention of the doctors and staff of the Ruijin Hospital in Shanghai. A spokesperson for the President said the level of care was highlighted by the concern of the Chinese President about Abela’s health. “President Hu Jintao wished President Abela a speedy recovery, and also asked to be briefed about his condition by the medical team.” Abela is to be repatriated to Malta as soon as possible, after a medical teleconference was held yesterday between Mater Dei medical experts and the Ruijin team. The Maltese medical team spoke with Abela directly, and examined the results of the radiological investigations carried out after the accident. Abela fell and suffered a fracture of the transverse process of the L2 vertebra. This injury is associated with severe bruising and pain, and requires bed rest, immobilisation and pain relief. Foreign Minister Tonio Borg, who is also in China, stood in for the President and opened the Malta stand at the Shanghai World Expo. He also visited the President in Hospital. Prior to the Chinese President’s visit to the hospital, the President of Malta had already been visited by Madame Fu, vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs. The visit ended with President Abela extending an invitation to the Chinese President to visit Malta, and with an exchange of gifts. Any comments? |
