Gonzi to propose €27 million loan tomorrow for billion-euro Greek bailout Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said yesterday he would not allow Malta’s economy to go the same way as Greece’s had done, as violent clashes with riot police continued to rock Athens.Gonzi was addressing the PN’s May Day discussion, in which aspects of his Vision 2015 programme were discussed with economists and workers’ representatives. Gonzi will on Monday present a Bill for a €27 million loan as part of a billion-euro bailout for Greece. “I would not allow this country to find itself in this situation (of Greece), but we have to work to be in a position of strength,” Gonzi said, while pointing out he would bring the deficit to below 3% and move towards a balanced budget. Today, finance minister Tonio Fenech will meet his European counterparts in Brussels to discuss the Greek bailout and other measures the country will have to take to rein its deficit. Gonzi yesterday said Malta’s competitiveness was dependent on the restructuring of the shipyards and public transport, and that these do not depend on public subsidies. Any comments? |
