Gozo accounts for a fifth of sanctioned illegalities

Around 20% of all illegal developments sanctioned by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority in the past 17 years hailed from Gozo, a MaltaToday analysis of illegal developments made permissible between 1992 and 2009 shows.
MEPA sanctioned 7,613 illegal developments between 1992 and July 2009. These included 1573 illegal developments in Gozo.
6,157 applications were sanctioned immediately by the Development Control Commission, and 1,456 applications were first turned down and subsequently accepted at reconsideration stage.
This shows that 24% of sanctioning took place at the reconsideration stage, which is now set to be abolished in the MEPA reform process. 281 Gozitan illegalities were sanctioned at reconsideration stage. This amounts to 19% of all sanctioning at reconsideration stage.
St Paul’s Bay in Malta emerges as the locality with the highest number of sanctioned developments (430). Ta’ Xbiex (14), Cospicua (20) and Floriana (22) reported the lowest number of sanctioned illegalities.
