Zrinzo Azzopardi will not run for secretary-general
Labour party president Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, who assumed the role of interim secretary-general, said yesterday on Super One Radio that he would not be seeking election as secretary-general in next January’s general conference.
Instead, Zrinzo Azzopardi said he would be seeking re-election as president – a sign that another candidate, this time favoured by the party’s establishment, will be running for secretary-general next year.
Jason Micallef stepped down from his post as secretary-general of the PL last Sunday, to head One Productions (the party’s media arm) as chairman, instead. The party said the changes followed talks with party leader Joseph Muscat over changes within the party’s administrative, political and commercial sections. Micallef will not be seeking re-election.
MaltaToday had also revealed that Muscat had told close aides that he was ready to take Micallef head-on, as relations between the two men had reportedly broken down. Sources described Micallef as a “yoke around Muscat’s neck”, with the former secretary-general’s antagonism towards Muscat’s handpicked chief executive James Piscopo seen as undermining the Labour leader’s authority.
Zrinzo Azzopardi was appointed interim general secretary last week, when Jason Micallef stepped down.
