Scandalous defence of tuna ranching industry

The position taken by the government – and by extension the Nationalist Party and the Labour Party’s appeals for the government to ‘resist’ a ban on international trade in bluefin tuna – is irresponsible and scandalous.
What is jingoistically termed as ‘Malta’s interest’ that the PN and PL are so vehemently defending is in fact the short-term interest of the tuna ranching industry. Bluefin Mediterranean tuna risks going extinct in five years time if the current level of industrial fishing continues. There will be nothing to ‘ranch’ in five years’ time. Those who industrially harvest a natural resource such as tuna should know only too well that such measures are in the common interest of us all, including of fishermen who use sustainable methods to fish tuna (‘bil-konz’).
It is crystal clear that PN and PL are for some reason or other defending the greed of the few instead of the common interest of all.
At least we can read about these important issues in MaltaToday. Others choose to ignore in-depth reporting about such issues.
