No cinemas, more shops for Midi’s Tigné Point

The Tigné Point developers have secured permission to build more shops instead of cinemas, after the Malta Environment and Planning Authority amended the permit it originally issued in 2002 to Midi plc.
For the second time, the MEPA board has amended the permit originally issued on the basis of the Tigné development brief.
Back in 2005, MEPA had removed two of the cinemas, and reduced the size of the sports facilities, to make way for more retail development.
A few weeks ago, MEPA removed all the previously approved cinemas to make way for more retail outlets. Since cinemas would have required halls with high ceilings, their elimination from the project creates more room for shops, which will be housed on a mezzanine level.
The newly-approved plans also refer to an increase in the height of the football pitch fencing which will be used “for practice purposes only”.
MEPA also approved an additional vehicular link under Censu Scerri Street.
It has yet to approve two new high-rise structures however. Midi is awaiting permits for a 12-14 storey office block. MEPA is currently formulating a master plan for this part of the development, but has already approved the car park beneath the proposed tower.
