Berlusconi (Claudine Cassar, ‘Berlusconi, the bully of the Med’, 6 September) is not a bully, but he is doing what is best for his country, something our authorities never dreamt of doing.
Most of the African countries illegal immigrants are coming from are already blessed with the most expensive weapon that is making our economy a headache, and that is oil. Take Nigeria. This country is blessed with the most expensive crude oil. If the leaders of the world want to solve this problem, by ensuring that the country has a democratic government, I’m sure there will be no need of people seeking asylum.
Berlusconi saw the disaster these illegal immigrants are bringing to his country, and he is safeguarding his people and his country.
Surely we cannot let these people die; we are all humans. But we have to be brave enough and have guts, and condemn the people that are sending them here. After all this is a big business, and we cannot suffer hardship because of them.
Our island cannot handle this amount of immigrants. We are doing more than enough for them, and surely we have to take care of our economy as well, because we are already witnessing this hardship on our economy because of them.
Action speaks louder than words, and that is what we have to do, and not try to be heroes and branding people that are feeling this pressure on their country as bullies.
Ms Cassar should try convincing the superpowers and the rich African countries to elect democratic governments in the places these immigrants come from, and be sure, they will have a standard of living better than what we have over here.
