The weight of our welfare state

As a newly retired worker, what I feel when reading such an article (‘Welfare State could collapse under its own weight’, 2 August) is the way people like me, who have worked and paid their NI contribution sand my monthly share of income tax for 40 years, are being treated. Now they tell us that the health and social benefits are no longer sustainable.
I cannot help but feeling betrayed by our politicians who have been there to safeguard our future. How would you feel when you pass by the University grounds and see thousands of cars parked outside, knowing these people are not only getting their education for free but also being paid in the process? How would you feel when you hear that hundreds of young women give birth to children declaring an unknown father and they get special treatment with benefits that they never contributed for?
Sorry. This government has been in office for tens of years and is responsible. They would surely have to answer for any shortcomings in our pensions.
