Chemimart files protest over City Gate relocation

The former president of the Chamber of Commerce, Reginald Fava, has filed a judicial protest in the name of his company Chemimart, over relocation plans by the Lands Department of businesses located at Freedom Square which will soon be the site of works for the new parliament.
The firm filed a judicial protest against the Lands Department, the Medicines Authority, parliamentary secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister Chris Said, and the Attorney General.
In the protest, the firm says it was offered an alternative site in Valletta by the department, which turned out to be unfeasible due to “objections by third parties” and the standing rules for the siting of pharmacies.
Chemimart said it was still waiting for a temporary licence for the relocation of the Freedom Square pharmacy to another of its branches, in Republic Street, pending its relocation by the Lands Department.
The firm said there was no reason why the Medicines Authority should not issue a temporary licence under the “special circumstances caused by the government’s decision for a national project”.
“The authority’s shortcoming on this part is discriminatory… given that every Freedom Square business and retailers located beneath the theatre ruins were relocated or adequately compensated,” the firm said.
Chemimart said its situation would endanger its employees’ jobs.
