Malta not expected to make 2020 renewable energy target

The EU will meet its 2020 20% renewable energy target, but not with Malta’s help, according to an analysis by the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) of all 27 Member States’ national forecast documents.
As things stand, Malta has already missed its second deadline to submit a report forecasting its 2020 renewable energy targets.
The other five member states who do not expect to meet their target are Belgium, Italy, Luxembourg, Bulgaria and Denmark. Bottom of the league is Italy which will have to import renewable energy from neighbouring non-EU countries (Albania, Croatia, Serbia and Tunisia).
By the end of 2010 Malta is bound to produce 10% of its energy needs through clean energy. Until now, Malta is the only member state among the EU 27 that still depends totally on fossil fuels to produce all its electricity needs.
The construction of three wind farms and a submarine link to the European electricity grid are in the pipeline but no dates have been announced regarding completion.
