Long overdue: MEPA’s ‘State of the Environment’ report
James Debono The State of the Environment report, which includes detailed information and statistics on air quality, climate change, land-use, soil, water, waste and bio-diversity will be published… two years late.
Despite a legal obligation to publish a State of the Environment report every three years, no such report has been published by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority since 2005.
A MEPA spokesperson said the authority will publish a report for 2008 “in the coming weeks.” MEPA had published annual updates of the key environmental indicators used in the report in 2006 and 2007, but no such updates have been published in the past two years.
The publication of the report is an obligation under the Environment Protection Act, where MEPA is required to publish a state of the environment report every three years. In its website MEPA boasts that it “goes beyond this requirement by also publishing annual updates of the key environmental indicators used in the report.”
