Musumeci submits nomination for casual election

Siggiewi PN Mayor Robert Musumeci yesterday presented his nomination for next Thursday’s casual election, defying ‘suggestions’ by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi not to contest for the vacated seat on the sixth electoral district.
The 38-year old architect reportedly opted to submit his nomination three days before the listings closed to end speculation about his candidature.
Musumeci has been in the line of fire on his private life by Malta Independent columnist Daphne Caruana Galizia. Shortly after various blogs were posted on his relationship with Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera, Gonzi informed Musumeci that it would not be opportune for him to contest the casual election.
MaltaToday is informed that a number of PN insiders were actively following developments at Evans Building, while also sounding out close acquaintances of Musumeci in a last-ditch attempt to dissuade the Siggiewi mayor from submitting his nomination for the seat vacated by former minister John Dalli who resigned his post following his appointment as European Commissioner.
Meanwhile, Zebbug PN Councillor Peter Micallef has also submitted his nomination yesterday.
Speaker Louis Galea announced last week that he was accepting the Prime Minister’s nomination to serve as an auditor at the European Courts of Justice in Luxembourg, a post that he is to hold for the next five years.
Louis Galea, who failed to be returned to Parliament in the 2008 general elections after almost 30 years as an MP and minister in four PN cabinets, renounced his interest in contesting the casual election.
