Women get €3m ‘baby credits’

Over €2.1 million in income tax were refunded to women returning to employment this year, figures presented in parliament show.
In the past three years, government paid €3.2 million for 3,600 claims for refunds. In 2009 alone, over 2,000 claims for the refunds were accepted by the government – almost three times the figure in 2008, 735.
The tax credit is available for all mothers of children under 16, returning to work after an absence of at least five years from active employment; or for women either currently employed or who were not absent from active employment for more than five years, and who had children since 2007.
The €2,000 tax credit for gainfully occupied women who have had children since 2007 was also increased to €5,000 for self-employed women only earlier this year.
The government had previously introduced tax credits to encourage women to return to employment in 2005. That year (according to fiscal records for 2006) 301 claims were accepted, totalling €188,000 in refunds. The year after, claims increased to 528, totalling €415,000.
Another €790,000 was paid back in childcare centre refunds to 1,518 claimants over the past two years.
