Gonzi dismisses Marsaskala mayor’s claims on caravan site

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi has dismissed claims by Marsaskala mayor Mario Calleja which said that the local council was not informed of a ministerial application to develop a caravan site at Zonqor point.
Gonzi told parliament that MEPA informs every local council of any application submitted in their locality, even if it is not obliged to do so by law.
When contacted, Calleja reiterated that the council was never consulted by MEPA and only learned about the caravan application from an article on another newspaper.
Calleja says the council could not even object in time to the application as it did not know about it. But as soon as it learned about the application, the council wrote to MEPA chairman Austin Walker asking him to withdraw the application in order to ensure proper consultation.
Contacted by MaltaToday, a MEPA spokesperson said the local council was informed by post and email on 14 April, 2009 – four days before a notice on the caravan application was published in the press. Despite being submitted late, the council’s submissions are still being considered for the processing of the application.
