Pope Benedict XVI will visit Malta on 17 – 18 April.
The news was announced yesterday by Archbishop Paul Cremona during a catechetical congress.
Pope Benedict XVI, who will arrive in the afternoon with a direct flight from Rome will be greeted by President George Abela and will be hosted at the Palace in Valletta for official talks, and will later meet Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and the leader of the Opposition Joseph Muscat. In the evening, he will visit St. Paul’s grotto in Rabat.
On 18 April, the Pontiff will celebrate mass on the Granaries in Floriana and will meet Malta’s youth at a special gathering to be held at the Valletta Waterfront.
In a statement, the Maltese government said it had greeted the news of the Pope’s visit’s confirmation with gladness. The Prime Minister has constituted an organizational committee to work together with the ecclesiastical authorities towards the success of the two-day visit.
