“Listing eating and drinking as a hobby may seem a bit of a cop-out, but genuinely my life revolves around it. I enjoy it. It’s not fuel or sustenance to me. It is a major factor in the scheduling of every meeting and every holiday I have. And I’m always looking for an excuse to cater!
“I believe in good, honest food; local produce, seasonal foods, pretty (necessary) packaging and I’m big on tradition. Wherever I am, I will try the classic dish, but from a hidden away bistro where it is more likely to be made as it is supposed to be. My luggage on the way back is normally filled with spices, relishes and menus so I can attempt to recreate the memory. And a few pairs of shoes.
“I’m as happy in a diner as in a Relais, on a picnic as in a pizza parlour, delis are my favourite shops. I enjoy testing out new recipes on friends and make a mean variety of cocktails. The food is often remembered – in fact I have a bartering system with some and orders from others – the ‘what happened after the cocktails’ is not ever talked about.
“I enjoy all types of food with a weakness for strong flavours, delicate textures; food that makes me ‘mmmm’ and want to share the experience. I have too many favourites to list, but hot buttered popcorn will always satisfy me. The crunch, the saturation of flavour, the pure selfish, sinfulness, but I don’t share my popcorn lightly.
“I judge people by the food they prepare and the choices they make – it says a lot about a person.”
