‘No respect, no UNESCO’ – world expert

The Maltese government must understand that Valletta’s status as a city of ‘heritage of mankind’ carries with it a series of responsibilities, and unless the criteria are respected, the historical city cannot expect to consider itself as part of the ‘elite’.
Speaking yesterday on the sidelines of an international symposium on the rebirth of the baroque, world renowned architect and UNESCO expert Giorgio Croci from Rome’s La Sapienza University told MaltaToday that the issues concerning Valletta’s ‘Heritage of Mankind’ status “depends on the government’s will to preserve the unique identity of the city.”
Giorgio Croci who was asked to comment about the recent warnings issued by UNESCO to the Maltese government about the stark contrast to the splendour of the ‘city for gentleman’ with the concrete structures of Tigne’s MIDI project, stressed that UNESCO’s status comes as “no freebie” but rather as a title that carries with it many responsibilities and obligations.
“You must understand that UNESCO’s title is for the benefit of all and is definitely not to suit anybody in particular.
“The main benefactors of such a title are the people and the generations to come, and if the administrators do not respect the people, then UNESCO’s status is not fit to enrich the city,” professor Croci said.
