Cheques accepted… only from Maltese

A recent visit to Ultimate in San Gwann, a retailer of consumer electronics and electrical appliances, has revealed that although I am a Maltese resident and EU national, my cheque payment has been declined for the simple reason of not being ‘Maltese’ (ie. having a ‘M’ or ‘L’ on my ID card number). It seems this company is unaware that Malta joined the EU six years ago.
