Italian MPs clash with airport security

The Italian government has complained at the manner in which a parliamentary delegation was treated by security personnel at Malta International Airport at the end of a two-day visit.
Security personnel opened all the luggage of the delegation led by Margherita Boniver, of Italy’s Schengen and immigration committee, to remove shaving foam, liquid bottles, and other items such as cosmetic scissors from them.
Although these were normal searches, the move surprised the delegation, who waved their blue diplomatic passports and insisted they were not subject to baggage control. Moreover, they were travelling on a specially chartered Italian Airforce aircraft.
Maltese security personnel told MaltaToday they were abused verbally by some members of the delegation. Officials were later instructed by the foreign ministry not to persist with the security checks and to let the delegation through.
