Much has been said of all the visitors to Renzo Piano’s plans’ exhibition at the Auberge de Provence in Valletta, but not everyone has the time or indeed the energy to make the trip in this heat. For some time now, local companies have been producing walkthrough films, or the cheaper 3-D montages where on drags the computer mouse to study architectural perspectives, shadow effects on surrounding buildings, impact on surrounding views and what not.
It is inconceivable that Piano’s office works without these virtual models, and therefore it does seem strange that this material has not been made available to the public. This is particularly so when one considers that some projects of much less importance are shown in this way by a notoriously cagey MEPA website.
When one then reflects that the project was launched under the aegis of the minister for IT, it becomes a particularly glaring lacuna. No doubt this inadequacy has not been intentional and will be put right immediately. This lack of readily-accessible information is immediately a hindrance to the public’s power to criticise, however constructively.
