Labour – ‘government must listen to people’ on Valletta

The Labour Party yesterday made a point of noting that it had not been involved in any of the government’s plans for the new City Gate and parliament, but said it would stay “positive and contribute to anything that concerns the national interest.”
In its first reaction yesterday evening after the unveiling of the Renzo Piano plans, the party qualified its presence at the ceremony by saying it expected the government to involve workers, businesses, professionals and students from Malta and Gozo in its plans for Valletta.
“We hope the government will listen to people’s suggestions,” the PL said.
“We want the best for our capital city. Everyone has their own views and preferences, and undoubtedly not everyone will agree on everything. Labour’s vision goes beyond the aesthetic of Valletta: we want a city that is not just a showcase, but to be the economic and cultural heart of our country.”
The party said the government must be ready to listen to people’s suggestions, and to correctly estimate the cost of the project, from where it will be financed, its deadline for completion, and that it does not incur wastage.
“This is because in times of difficulty for families, such as the present hike in bills and taxes, it is important that the public is sure that their money is not being wasted but used appropriately.”
