NEWS | Wednesday, 4 June 2008 Coleiro-Preca pledges serenity and tranquillity for Labour Marie-Louise Coleiro-Preca yesterday concluded her electoral campaign for the Labour leadership by insisting she would instil “serenity and tranquillity” inside Labour.
She said would put herself to the delegates’ verdict in four years’ time, if elected leader, for them to assess the direction she would have taken the party into. Her modest campaign was aimed at not adding any undue pressure on delegates, Coleiro-Preca said. “What I said from the very start, I will sustain because I want to lead consistently, and not opportunistically or erratically.” Coleiro-Preca, a former Labour secretary-general, said the campaign had showed her what the situation inside Labour was. She said that if elected, she would immediately embark on her work for renewal and much needed reform within the party, even in the eventuality of an early election and being able to win it. She said Labour’s election defeat had been very indicative of what party delegates had told her, which is why she proposed a number of organisational reforms for the party’s operation. She said these reforms were aimed at bringing people closer, communication the party’s message better, and turn Labour into a credible and media-friendly party. “Credibility is earned when we call a spade a spade, and when we use all those measures granted to us by democracy to stand up against what affects our families negatively,” Coleiro-Preca said.
