One Love

Mikrokosmos
Series of paintings by Helga Portanier at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Valletta. The works, whose media are tempera, ink and watercolour on paper, draw on textural inspiration from natural elements that surround us: bark, shells, fossils, shrubs.

Art From Within
Traveling collective exhibition of Art Brut paintings at the St James Cavalier Upper Galleries. The project originated at the Haus der Kunstler in Gugging, Austria, as part of the ‘Kunst Von Innen’ (Art from within) project. The exhibition is commissioned by the Ministry of European and International Affairs.

Sea Dreaming
Derek Nice returns to St James Cavalier with new works, often made from recycled, regenerated found objects and materials. In collaboration with Vince Briffa (installation artist) Renzo Spiteri (percussionist) and Digby Atkinson (painter and printmaker).

Sch·ism
The latest experimental art event organised by Edukarti, an organisation of Art Education students within the Faculty of Education at the University of Malta, exhibited on the lower floor of St James Cavalier. Some of the drawings are in graphite or cut up into little squares that form a larger work when assembled, like pixels on a computer screen. Others are produced using smoke and even cigarette ash. Others became sculpture in mixed media, or were conceived using digital photo editing and 3D software. The exhibiting students are Emanuel Bonnici, Laura Cachia, Clive Gerada, Louise Mallia, Maria Micallef and Massabielle Zammit.

FILM SCREENINGS

Conviction
Moviment Graffiti will be screening this documentary, on three American Dominican nuns who protested against their country’s war policies by trespassing federal property and pouring their own blood. The venue is 60A, Strait Street, Valletta and the film starts at 20:00. A discussion will follow the documentary film, through guest speakers Fra
Gwann Xerri and Sr. Maria Julia Ardito, ardent liberation theology followers.

Five to the Floor
Out of the Box and D.Artz present a documentary on the Maltese clubbing scene at Q’bar, Valletta Waterfront from 21:30. The documentary portrays the Maltese clubbing scene as seen through the eyes of DJ Specs. It shows the evolution of electronic music via five influential Maltese djs and producers: Owen Jay, Brian James, Spooky Monkey, Roderick and Duo Blanc. There will be an after-party featuring Owen Jay and DJ Specs. Entrance is free
