Joseph Muscat promises new elections for party administration

Labour leadership contender Joseph Muscat yesterday said his first action as leader, if elected, will be to meet the other contenders and take a decision on holding an election for the administrative committee as soon as possible.
The election for the administrative committee elects the party president and vice-president, the secretary-general, the financial secretary, the education secretary, the public relations secretary, and the international secretary.
None of these officials have submitted their resignation after the Labour election defeat.
“I will respect the delegates’ choice and be loyal to whoever is chosen as party leader. If I am chosen, my first action will be to meet and discuss with the four contenders for Labour to move forward.
“I will see that the national executive and the parliamentary group meets together to decide on a date for an election for the administrative committee as soon as possible so that the renewal process can achieve momentum.”
Muscat yesterday described the campaign for the election of a new Labour leader, after the resignation of Alfred Sant, as an experience he would cherish. “I have been convinced that Labour is rich in human resources and ideas. I have also recognised that there is unutilised potential. I have confirmed the great thirst we have for a change in the way we do politics.”
Muscat said he had promised everyone he met to instil a positive and winning mentality that would make Labour open up to great change and new ideas. “I am convinced more than ever that our vision is to go beyond achieving the environmental, economic and social aspirations of Maltese and Gozitans.”
Muscat said Labour had to be a base for movement that brought together progressives and moderates. “This vision will truly herald a new political season. Together we will unite, change, and win.”
