The new Maltese – 12,112 foreign nationals granted citizenship

Sarah Attard Gialanze

The 2005 Census reveals there are 12,112 individuals who have obtained full Maltese citizenship, of which 6,200 are women and 5,912 are men.
The British, including Maltese who were born in Great Britain and migrated to Malta, rank the highest when it comes to the total number of people who were given citizenship, with 4,713 persons.
There were 2,033 persons who were born in other European countries who obtained Maltese citizenship, followed by 1,079 who were born in other EU member states. 1,569 individuals had another citizenship prior to being granted a Maltese one.
It is interesting to note that just 372 people who were born in Australia, a country renowned for the substantial number of Maltese immigrants residing there, were granted citizenship.
A new law will now open the channels for second and third-generation Maltese living in Australia to claim citizenship and enjoy the benefits of EU membership according to Maltese citizens.
However, Italy, Germany and Libya all had a high count of individuals born in the country who later migrated to Malta, with 585, 518 and 493 respectively.
Other countries who provided Malta with new citizens were America (255), Canada (170) and France (127).
The remaining 198 persons who were granted Maltese citizenship were previously stateless.
The northern harbour district has proven to be the most popular area for non-Maltese nationals with 4,996 individuals choosing to live there. Surprisingly, Sliema, always a favourite amongst tourists and locals alike, did not attract the highest number of immigrants with 1,338 residents who were granted Maltese citizenship.
The locality with the highest number of immigrants was St Paul’s Bay, beating Sliema by 508 persons who obtained citizenship.
Gozo also attracted its fair share of immigrants, with Xaghra and Nadur in the lead where many returned émigrés live. The main nationalities in Gozo are British, with a total of 657, followed by Australians, totalling 93, who obtained citizenship.
