Malta-Sicily cable to be located in Maghtab Enemalta has presented a planning application to build a terminal station for the cable connecting Malta to the European energy grid on a site bordering on the Ghallis engineered landfill in Wied ta’ Kieli, in Maghtab. The location was chosen after a study to consider a number of alternative locations, an Enemalta spokesperson told MaltaToday. Part of the site had already been identified for the extension of the Ghallis landfill, but the site is now considered ideal for the terminal station. The terminal station will be big enough to cater for the two interconnection cables set to link Malta with Sicily. In a sign of urgency, Enemalta has applied before the adjudication of the tender for the installation of the cable. The tender has already been published and bidders have up to July to apply. The target is to award the contract by November 2010. Four companies have so far presented a bid for the contract. The government plans to develop the interconnection cable by the end of 2012.
