Maltese least likely to exercise outdoors – Eurobarometer Only 28% of the Maltese engage in sports or physical activity in parks or in the natural environment, ranking the lowest among Europeans after Greece (27%).An EU-wide survey on physical activity and sports found Slovenians most likely to take to the outdoors to get their exercise, while cold countries like Finland (76%) and Estonia (67%) confirm a greater preference of exercising in natural settings unlike sunny Mediterranean states. The Maltese and the Italians are also the least likely to engage in physical activity at work. 24% of the Maltese do not engage themselves in any outdoor physical activity. This makes them the sixth laziest nation in Europe. Four of the five EU states found to be lazier than the Maltese also hail from the Mediterranean: Portugal is the country with the greater number of people (36%) who never engage in any form of outdoor physical activity. On the other hand, only 2% of the Swedes engage in no outdoor physical activity at all. The Maltese are the third most likely to express dissatisfaction with sports facilities in the their country. In fact, only 51% of the Maltese compared to 95% of the Dutch express satisfaction with sports facilities. The Maltese are also the fourth country most likely not to have time for sports (54%) compared to just 33% of Finns. Any comments? |
