US crime report warns of Malta internet scams

Bus drivers are ‘unprofessional, aggressive and impatient’

US citizens have been warned to beware of online scams through which tourists are deceived into paying deposits on short-term apartment leases in Malta that do not exist.
This warning was issued in the latest crime and safety report by the US Overseas Security Advisory Council.
According to the report, victims of these online scams are being misled into providing electronic copies of personal information contained on their passports.
The report warns that taxis in Malta are expensive and advises tourists to negotiate fare prices before entering any vehicle. While travel by bus is deemed inexpensive, bus drivers are described as “unprofessional, aggressive and sometimes less willing to show patience with foreigners.”
The report specifically refers to the disruptions and major delays over a period of three days caused by the public transportation strike involving buses, limousines, and taxis in 2008.
Tourists who choose to drive are warned that due to flooding, roads in low-lying areas “may be impassable due to 12-18 inches or more of standing water.”
Clubbers are warned to avoid confrontation with bouncers and to depart the area at the first sign of potential problems.
But overall Malta is presented as a very safe location where police are “well trained and professional” and tourists are at a low risk of becoming victimised by crime.
So is the threat of political violence directed at Americans, even if “non-confrontational demonstrations by specific groups opposed to US foreign policy objectives are an occasional occurrence.”
