MEPA still compiling 2008 hunting figures

Carnet de Chasse figures for 2008 – which document the number of birds shot during that year – are still being compiled, a spokesperson for MEPA claimed.
This means that the government was still relying on outdated 2007 statistics when it opted for a limited spring hunting season of six days, basing itself on the argument accepted by the European Court of Justice that the autumn season does not represent an alternative to spring hunting.
MaltaToday is informed that the figures (which MEPA claims are still being compiled), show that following the first ever spring hunting ban that year, the number of common quails that migrated over Malta in autumn was higher than previous years and even higher than in spring.
MEPA attributes the delay in the publication of the 2008 figures, c“to logistics related to permit collection and delays in the development and trials related to the new software to cater for the data originating from the new Carnet de Chasse booklets.”
The figures for 2008 should be published in July 2010.
