A seasoned tourist defends the islands I refer to Theo Chalmers’s letter ‘A disgruntled tourist speaks out’ (4 April 2010). I too am a tourist but unlike Mr Chalmers, I have been coming to the islands for years now. I don’t see any problem whatsoever with tourists being asked to pay an entrance fee to enter a cathedral. That after all is how they are maintained. I’m not speaking here as a Catholic, by the way, just as a tourist who loves old buildings and appreciates the work put into them by Maltese craftsmen. What I do object to is local people being asked to pay when all they want to do is spend a few minutes in quiet worship. Any comments? |
