Non-sexist stand of NCW on women in the media

Sexist stereotyping in the media that portray women in a degrading manner is offensive at any age or level of maturity and should not be tolerated.
With reference to Maria Grech Ganado’s letter ‘Nonsensical women’s council stand on Realta saga’ (28 March 2010), NCW reiterates its stand that sexist texts, whether directly or indirectly discriminatory, or that contain sexist insults or degrading images of women and men, are simply reinforcing the unfortunately ingrained culture that women – rather than being free, independent thinkers on equal footing with men – are nothing more than sex objects.
As for texts or readings selected within an educational context at any level, the situation is different. I am sure that whoever is responsible for the choice of textbooks and the teachers/lecturers who study and discuss with their students works that include sex as a theme, are professional in shaping their attitudes and behaviour, and that their approach is based on respect for the individual, be they male or female.
