PM to table changes to ministerial code

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi is tomorrow expected to table a four paragraph addendum to the Ministerial Code to cover the responsibilities of the newly appointed Parliamentary assistants.
The amendments to the Code were reportedly compiled by the Cabinet Office. A spokesperson for Castille refused to forward a copy of the amended code that has already been given to MPs. He stressed that “The Code of Ethics for Parliamentary assistants will be tabled in Parliament.”
Gonzi has reportedly met with ministers and the newly appointed PA’s and asked them to report back “if the system is working”.
While talks are still underway between the Prime Minister, deputy PM Tonio Borg and parliamentary whip David Agius about the new roles, no decision has been taken yet on whether the MPs will have offices inside the respective ministries.
A PN parliamentary group meeting called last Thursday saw the Prime Minister confirm that the proposed reform on primary healthcare had been taken “back to the drawing board,” given the strong opposition by his MPs. Critical MPs had made it clear to him that the reform would mean “the end of free healthcare”.
