AD – ‘Malta should tell Gaddafi to sign Geneva’

Alternattiva Demokratika is calling on the Maltese government to commit Libya to sign and ratify the Geneva Convention on the status of refugees on the occasion of the visit by Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.
Gaddafi is expected to visit Malta in March, his first visit since he last came here as a guest of Labour prime minister Dom Mintoff in 1983.
Prof. Arnold Cassola, AD spokesperson on EU and international affairs, said: “This visit is an excellent occasion for the Maltese government to bring up the issue of the respect of basic human rights in Libya. The Libyan government should give a clear signal to the world that the behaviour of the past is over and that it is now ready to sign and ratify the Geneva Convention.”
AD chairperson Michael Briguglio added: “It is in everybody’s interest that Libya respects basic human rights. Once this is ascertained, migrants would be able to apply for their refugee status in Libya itself and then be able to move in a regular and safe manner to other countries around the world, without having to cross over to Malta and to other countries in dangerous conditions and at the mercy of human traffickers, endangering their lives in the process.”
