James Debono Sliema registered the highest number of home burglaries, 61, and the second highest number of shop burglaries, 46, after Valletta in the first ten months of 2009.
On the other hand, St Paul’s Bay reported the highest number of stolen cars, 35, as well as the second highest number of home burglaries, 54.
The rate of home burglaries in Sliema remained practically the same as 2008 when an average of six burglaries a month were also reported. The number of burglaries has doubled since 2004, when an average of three burglaries a month were reported.
While Valletta registered the highest number of robberies from shops (58), only nine homes were burgled in the capital city.
A total of 683 home burglaries, 392 shop robberies and 353 car thefts were reported in Malta in Gozo.
Only five shops were burgled in Gozo in 2009. These represented just 1.2% of shop robberies in Malta. But Gozo accounted for 5% of car burglaries and 6% of home burglaries.
The least safe Gozitan locality was Zebbug where nine homes were burgled and four cars stolen. The small locality of Munxar also reported five home burglaries as well as a stolen car. Even tiny San Lawrenz and Ghasri reported two home burglaries each, dispelling the idyllic notion that small villages are completely sheltered from crime.
In Malta, the safest localities were Dingli and Mdina, where no home burglaries occurred. Other safe localities were Luqa, Gharghur, and Mqabba, which reported one home burglary each.
