MaltaToday journalist discharged from ITU

David Darmanin, the MaltaToday journalist and editor of Gourmet Today, who was stabbed outside his Sliema wine bar last Monday, has been discharged from the Intensive Therapy Unit.
Doctors said Darmanin, 29, had showed positive signs of recovery after suffering a stab in the back and three more in his abdomen early Tuesday morning as he was closing his establishment. Darmanin was found by police lying unconscious in a pool of blood just outside the bar after he was allegedly stabbed three times while inside his outlet in High Street, Sliema.
James Aquilina, 35 of Attard, has denied stabbing Darmanin and pleaded not guilty to his attempted murder. Aquilina used to date Darmanin’s girlfriend. He was apprehended on Wednesday afternoon.
An Englishman also witnessed the attack.
Police Inspectors Chris Pullicino and Jesmond Micallef requested that bail be denied due to the seriousness of the allegations. Defence lawyer Gianella Caruana Curran asked for her client to be examined by a doctor over injuries to his left arm and on his neck. The neck injury turned out to be a shaving cut.
She also said that she was not asking for bail as the defence counsel were informed that there were a number of civilian witnesses that still had to testify. She requested that they be brought to court as soon as possible.
Magistrate Audrey Demicoli remanded the accused in custody.
