€4 million allocated for road surface repair works
The Network Infrastructure Directorate of the Malta Transport Authority has allocated a total of €4 million for road surface repair works and road-side repair works during 2009.
The €4m figure covers works that were carried out on 44 arterial, distributory and link roads between January and the end of September and works that will be carried out in various localities between October and December.
A ‘condition rating system’ was used to prioritise roads on which road surface repair works were to be carried out. The condition rating system considers the severity and extent of numerous criteria such as potholes, cracks, ride quality, traffic volume, and poor drainage.
The repair works are being carried out using hot rolled asphalt, generally used in road construction projects. Unlike cold asphalt, hot rolled asphalt is considered to be more durable as it is not softened by water. The repair works are major patching, covering those stretches of the road that require intervention.
The works are co-ordinated with various stakeholders, including the utility corporations, service providers and businesses. Particular attention is being given to traffic management and the dissemination of information on diversion routes and closures through adverts in the media. Where feasible, works are being carried out during off-peak traffic hours and also during the night to lessen the inconvenience to the general pubic.
All works are being closely monitored during the implementation period and an audit is conducted at the end of the works to ensure that the works carried out meet the standards set by the Network Infrastructure Directorate.
Till the end of October, works will be carried out on Vjal Sir Paul Boffa, December 13 Street, Triq Garibaldi, Marsa Bypass, Triq il-Labour, Sta Venera tunnels, Regional Road, Triq Dun Karm, and St Andrew’s Road.
