An idea submitted last year by The Gaia Foundation, Malta, to Google’s 10 to the power of 100 initiative has been included in Google’s shortlist of 16 projects out of more than 150,000 ideas submitted to the company from people around the world.
Last year Google launched its initiative as part of its 10th anniversary celebrations, committing 10 million dollars to help realise 5 projects that could help to change the world by helping as many people as possible. It asked people to submit their ideas, which would be shortlisted. The shortlist would then be put to a public vote across the world to select 5 projects for development. Once the projects are selected, a process will be launched to identify the organisations that are best suited to implement them.
The Gaia Foundation in Malta submitted an idea for the design, development and promotion of a quadrocycle, a low tech means of transport as an extension to the bicycle, for use in the developing world for transport of more than one person and baggage that may include water or agricultural produce for transport to the village or to market, or transport of children to school.
Google’s selection team has grouped some proposals together to shortlist 16 out of over 150,000 ideas received from around the world. Gaia’s idea has been included in one of these 16, entitled -drive innovation in public transport- under suggestion 4, promoting bicycle commuting via more effcient bike safety systems.
Google’s 10 to the power of 100 website has invited the public to vote to select the best 5 proposals, through its website at www.project10tothe100.com. The voting is open to the 8th October. The Gaia Foundation is asking the public to participate in the worldwide vote and to support its transport system idea.
