Helping Malta’s most vulnerable young people

I would like to add my voice to that of Ms Claudine Cassar (19 July) who wrote poignantly about the fate of too many of Malta’s youngest people. It really is no longer acceptable that resources and services for Malta’s homeless are meant to mainly come from fundraising and donations to YMCA. The State must either take responsibility for this area of need, or fund YMCA to do so.
The previous board of the Housing Authority did try to help. We used profits generated through our building programme to help fund salaries and also offered them a building in Msida, and agreed to give them the funds to convert it, or do so ourselves.
I hear all this has been stopped which is more than a shame. It is life and health-threatening to many young people.
Surely if we have €80 million to house parliamentarians we can properly fund a hostel, a refuge for desperate and vulnerable homeless people, and for Malta’s most vulnerable young people?
