Excessive use of force allegations

We have had frequent allegations of police mishandling people. Still fresh are the accusations made against the police in the case of the man who ended in hospital and died of a reported fall while in police custody. Last week we had the AFM Brigadier stating that the five Eritreans intercepted by a Maltese patrol boat were in good health and clean-shaven, whilst the Italian authorities said they were living skeletons. All this puts in doubt what our armed forces are doing.
I still cannot believe these things are really happening in our island. I remember in the early 1980s when a man was killed whilst under interrogation. The present ruling party then in Opposition wanted justice to be done. Everybody agreed. But why are the same people allowing these rumours to persist, even today, without transparent and independent inquiries?
All this smells of an ageing and arrogant administration. It seems true that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. It is now quite obvious that history is repeating itself. Malta needs a breath of fresh air. The sooner the better.
