A population of almost 500 million people live in the territory of the EU’s 27 member states. But how many of us are really into what the EU has been doing and its future plans? How many EU citizens feel close enough to the European institutions, knowing that their personal views are transmitted into the policy areas of the EU’s decision-making process?
In recent years, the EU has become increasingly aware of the need to get as close as possible to its citizens through public support and through the media. Its people need to have better access to the information they need and should know about the EU. The periodical issue of Eurobarometer surveys on different themes, ranging from public health to citizens’ confidence in Information Society, indicate whether or not the Europeans are satisfied with their quality of life. Malta’s membership of the EU did not stop five years ago. Its continuous participation in the EU’s policy-making process translates into more responsibility on its part for the dissemination of information to its citizens.
One of the Malta EU-Steering and Action Committee’s (MEUSAC) main tasks is to provide, principally through its Information Unit, information to the public on Malta’s positions within the EU, its institutions, as well as on other rights which Maltese citizens are now entitled to, as well as to lead and stimulate a national debate on European ideals, values, objectives and long term strategies. It is in this context that earlier this year, MEUSAC entered into an agreement with the European Commission specifically to enhance communication channels locally by creating fora for public dialogue on EU matters.
This summer a Roadshow will be put up to increase the awareness of the general public on a variety of EU themes. A mobile unit will be providing information on the EU with particular reference to the Lisbon Treaty, the role of the EU institutions, EU funding opportunities and European consumer rights, amongst others. The activities organised, for individuals of all ages, will provide more information about the EU’s policies and institutions.
The Roadshow will visit all villages and town squares, especially during market days, in order to communicate directly with the public and provide information materials on the subjects selected. So when it’s visiting your town or village, take a few minutes to stop and get to know more about the EU. We look forward to seeing you there!
