Maltastar ads expose bizarre directive

Adverts paid by Labour MEP candidate Sharon Ellul Bonici have been appearing on none other than Labour’s internet organ maltastar.com, despite a bizarre order by secretary-general Jason Micallef to remove a billboard banner of hers last week.
Frank Cachia, the director of advertising firm AVG, last week accused Micallef of ordering party employees to remove two banners in Msida and Marsa promoting the PL candidate. Cachia said the banners promoted a Smash TV programme he produces and finances, which features Ellul Bonici as a permanent guest answering questions from various journalists.
Cachia said Micallef wanted him to remove the banner, but despite agreeing on a compromise to remove Ellul Bonici’s image from the banner, a party employee went ahead and removed the two banners. While no explanation has been forthcoming on Micallef’s decision to remove the banners promoting Ellul Bonici, the candidate has retained visible exposure in the press and even with internet banners on Labour’s maltastar.com – adding yet another peculiar twist to the mechanics of Labour’s electoral campaign.
