I refer to your article ‘MCA defends urban antennae’ (19 April).
The contradictions in this article are numerous.
The minister responsible for the MCA and the MCA cannot even agree on the number of mobile phone antennae installed on the island. The MCA claim there are 1,000 whilst the minister claims there are 2,114.
Just for the record these antennae are about three metres high and one metre wide.
The MCA claims that relocating these antennae to rural areas could result in even higher radiation levels.
However the MCA claim they have a leeway of
95% since all their readings are below 5% of the acceptable safe limit.
The MCA website originally claimed that all sites were below 2% the accepted safe limit. A jump of over 100%.
Why does the authority not wish to utilise this additional leeway it claims it has?
It is, according to them, very safe.
The article states there are a number of published scientific reports which suggest that even low levels of radiation can result in the non-thermal effects that can damage the DNA of living cells.
However the MCA fails to state whether they are too in agreement
with the ever growing scientific community who are concerned about the effects of EMF radiation.
I gently ask the MCA and the minister concerned why there is ample local legislation written in favour of the mobile phone service providers and absolutely nothing in terms of health and wellbeing. I would like to refer the MCA to the Venice Resolution 2008 for their further comments.
The web site is www.icems.eu.resolution.htm.
