Setting records straight on 1979

I am sorry to disappoint your correspondent Valerie Borg. I would like her to note that in 1979 the British left after the end of an agreement.
In 1971, Mintoff had every right to ask the British to leave, i.e. breaking an agreement; the British intended to oblige although they had every right to object, considering the defence agreement.
It was only Dr Gorg Borg Olivier who had told the British to leave the island, and this was during the administration of the British Labour party, under the administration of Harold Wilson. The British government did intend to honour the agreement and the Maltese government told them bluntly that in that case, they have to leave the island. Although at that time they did not wish to leave, they had dismantled most of their installation here. It was through very hard and difficult negotiations that the British forces had stayed.
I hope that one day, the true and objective modern history of Malta will be written without any bias.
