Government suspends six VAT employees

The finance ministry has announced it has suspended six employees from the VAT department in the light of investigations being carried out at the department by the Police.
Millions of euros are believed to have been lost as a result of fraudulent practices by VAT department staff going back a number of years. At least eight VAT department employees, including a pregnant woman, were arrested last Friday after a three-month investigation by police. A number of businessmen were also being investigated.
The department was defrauded of a large sum of money during the period of investigation, and is being tipped as one of the biggest cases of fraud involving a government entity.
The government has said it will not tolerate any abuse and for this reason expects that every allegation is investigated and all the necessary action taken according to law.
